Enhancing Your Chiropractic Experience: The Power of Orthotics

Welcome to a world where your feet are the foundation of your overall health and well-being. At A Chiropractic Wellness Place, we understand that the journey to a pain-free and balanced life often begins from the ground up. Our feet, the primary points of contact with the earth, play a crucial role in our body’s alignment, stability, and movement. However, many of us overlook the importance of foot health and its impact on our entire musculoskeletal system. In this blog post, we’ll explore how integrating orthotics into chiropractic care can create a harmonious balance in your body, leading to improved health and vitality.

At A Chiropractic Wellness Place here in Chelmsford, we take a unique approach to chiropractic care, one that recognizes the intricate connection between your feet and your overall musculoskeletal health. Our comprehensive treatment plans are not just about addressing symptoms; they’re about finding and treating the root cause of discomfort and imbalance. By focusing on the feet as a starting point, we can identify and correct issues that may be contributing to pain and dysfunction elsewhere in the body. Join us as we delve into the world of orthotics and chiropractic care, and discover how this powerful combination can transform your health journey at A Chiropractic Wellness Place.

The Initial Exam: Understanding Your Feet

The journey to optimal health at A Chiropractic Wellness Place begins with a thorough initial examination, a critical step in our holistic approach to chiropractic care. This exam is not just a routine check-up; it’s a detailed inspection of your overall body function starting with your feet, both in stillness and in motion. Our feet, often taken for granted, are the pillars of our body’s structure, and any imbalance in them can have far-reaching effects. During the exam I assess your feet while you’re standing still (at station) and observe your gait as you walk. This process allows us to understand how your feet interact with the ground and how this interaction influences your overall posture and alignment.

The significance of this examination cannot be overstated. When your feet do not pronate or supinate in sync, it leads to unequal forces being transmitted up through your legs. This imbalance can be the root cause of various issues, including “wear and tear” in the knees, hips, pelvis, and lower back, and can even affect the alignment of your skull. By identifying these imbalances early on, we can tailor a treatment plan that addresses these issues at their source. This comprehensive approach ensures that we’re not just treating symptoms but are working towards long-term health and wellness.

The Ripple Effect of Foot Imbalance

Understanding the ripple effect of foot imbalance is crucial in comprehending the comprehensive care provided at A Chiropractic Wellness Place. When the feet are not properly aligned, or when they pronate (roll inward) or supinate (roll outward) excessively, it creates a chain reaction throughout the body. This imbalance in the feet can lead to uneven distribution of weight and pressure, which in turn affects the legs, hips, and spine. Over time, these imbalances can contribute to chronic pain, increased wear and tear on joints, and even lead to more serious musculoskeletal disorders. It’s a subtle yet significant phenomenon that often goes unnoticed until more pronounced symptoms appear.

At A Chiropractic Wellness Place, we emphasize the importance of correcting these foot imbalances as a key component of our chiropractic care. By addressing issues at the feet, we can help alleviate stress and strain on other parts of the body. This approach is not just about providing immediate relief; it’s about preventing future problems and promoting overall body wellness. When your feet are properly aligned and functioning, it helps to maintain the natural alignment of your entire skeletal system, from your ankles all the way up to your neck and head. This holistic perspective is what sets our care apart and ensures that our patients receive the most comprehensive and effective treatment possible.

Orthotics as a Solution: Leveling and Resynchronizing Your Feet

Orthotics play a pivotal role in our treatment strategy at A Chiropractic Wellness Place. These high quality yet affordable inserts are more than just foot supports; they are a key tool in correcting foot imbalances and restoring proper foot function. Orthotics work by providing the necessary support and alignment to your feet, helping to distribute weight evenly and reduce stress on your joints. This not only alleviates pain and discomfort but also helps in resynchronizing the feet, ensuring that they pronate and supinate in a balanced manner. By doing so, orthotics play a crucial role in leveling the body’s foundation, leading to improved posture and movement efficiency.

The choice of orthotics is critical, and at A Chiropractic Wellness Place, we understand that one size does not fit all. There are various types of orthotics available, ranging from hard and rigid to soft and flexible. Hard and rigid orthotics are typically used for more severe foot deformities or conditions, offering maximum support and control. On the other hand, soft and flexible orthotics are often preferred for everyday use, providing comfort and cushioning while still offering adequate support. We work closely with each patient to determine the most appropriate type of orthotic based on their specific condition, lifestyle, and needs. This personalized approach ensures that our patients receive the most effective and comfortable solution for their foot imbalances.

Our Preferred Orthotic Approach

At A Chiropractic Wellness Place, we have a specific preference when it comes to selecting orthotics for our patients. Our experience has shown that most patients benefit greatly from soft, contoured orthotics. These types of orthotics are designed to provide a balance of support and flexibility, making them suitable for a wide range of foot types and conditions. Whether it’s a full-length orthotic for comprehensive foot coverage or a 3/4 length that fits more easily into different shoe styles, our focus is on providing an orthotic solution that offers both comfort and effectiveness. This approach ensures that our patients can enjoy the benefits of orthotics in their everyday activities without discomfort or inconvenience.

In our pursuit of offering the best value to our patients, we have chosen to use Power Step orthotics, a product line known for its quality and cost-effectiveness. Power Step orthotics are renowned for their ability to provide excellent support while still being affordable compared to custom-made options. These orthotics are designed to improve the closed-chain kinematics of gait, enhancing the way your feet interact with the ground during walking and other activities. By improving foot function, Power Step orthotics contribute significantly to the alignment and health of the structures above the feet, including the ankles, knees, hips, and spine. Our choice to use Power Step orthotics at A Chiropractic Wellness Place reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, accessible solutions for our patients’ foot and overall body health.

The Synergy of Chiropractic Care and Orthotics

The integration of orthotics into chiropractic care at A Chiropractic Wellness Place represents a synergistic approach to treating musculoskeletal issues. Chiropractic care focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. When combined with the use of orthotics, this approach becomes even more powerful. Orthotics support and enhance the effects of chiropractic adjustments by ensuring that the corrections made to the spine and other joints are maintained and reinforced through proper foot alignment. This synergy between orthotics and chiropractic care leads to more effective and lasting results, as it addresses the body’s issues from the foundation up.

Patients often report feeling more balanced and energetic, with a significant reduction in pain and discomfort. This combination not only corrects existing issues but also helps in retraining the musculoskeletal system, removing compensations and improving adaptations. As a result, patients experience an overall improvement in their body’s function and a decrease in the likelihood of future injuries or chronic conditions. At A Chiropractic Wellness Place, we are committed to providing a comprehensive treatment plan that includes both chiropractic adjustments and the appropriate use of orthotics, ensuring our patients achieve optimal health and wellness.

FAQ

Chiropractic

Will my insurance cover this?2022-12-30T00:19:34-05:00

Most insurance policies offer some chiropractic coverage. Dr. Chiungos works with Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, Tufts Health Plan, Unicare/GIC, and Medicare. See the No Surprises Act for more information.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?2022-12-30T00:00:01-05:00

Absolutely. Chiropractic as a profession is more than 100 years old. We follow industry guidelines during our new patient induction process to minimize risk and maximize benefit. Chiropractic malpractice insurance is considered by many to be the least costly  professional insurance in the healthcare industry because chiropractic is generally considered a safe, manual therapy.

When will I start feeling better?2022-12-30T00:00:41-05:00

It depends on your mechanism of injury and your current state of health. You might start feeling better as soon as your adjustment is finished. You might need to go home and ice (Dr. Chiungos will advise you). If your injury is serious, it may take several visits. But your healing has begun from the first adjustment. Your personal care plan is designed to take you from where you are today to your best possible outcome. Dr. Chiungos will keep you updated on your progress at each visit.

SpineMED®

Will my insurance cover decompression treatment?2022-12-30T00:07:24-05:00

Decompression treatment is not currently covered by health insurance. If Dr. Chiungos believes this is an integral part of your treatment plan, he will discuss all costs and potential discounts before the start of care. You will receive informed consent.

Is spinal disc decompression treatment safe?2022-12-30T00:08:59-05:00

Spinal Disc Decompression with the SpineMED® Table has shown to be safe and generally without major side effects or complications once abnormal conditions have been ruled out. The process is so safe and comfortable, it’s not uncommon for patients to fall asleep!

Are there any situations that are unsafe for decompression?2022-12-30T00:09:55-05:00

Specific situations that are not suited for decompression therapy include:

  • Patients under 12 years old
  • If you had spinal surgery that involved clips, mesh or fusion
  • If you have fractures, tumors or infections
  • If you have osteoporosis or spondylolisthesis where there’s been a fracture or non-union defect in the spine, where that segment that we want to traction is unstable
How does decompression complement traditional chiropractic?2022-12-30T00:10:24-05:00

Damaged intervertebral discs seldom heal as the discs are constantly under pressure from muscular spasm—during normal activities, and even while sleeping! SpineMED is designed to reduce the pressure in the discs, promoting the influx of vital fluids, nutrients and oxygen back into the discs to assist the body’s natural rebuilding process. This process may speed up the natural repair and could eventually heal damaged spinal discs.

How long will decompression therapy take?2022-12-30T00:10:50-05:00

Sessions are typically 30 minutes long. It could take 15 to 25 sessions or more to see some relief from your discomfort. That’s variable based on your status and the condition we’re treating. Ideally, the sessions are performed daily with rest on the weekend.

Aspen Laser

Will my insurance cover laser treatment?2022-12-30T00:02:57-05:00

Laser treatment, as used in chiropractic offices, is not currently covered by health insurance. If Dr. Chiungos believes this is an integral part of your treatment plan, he will discuss all costs and potential discounts before the start of care.

Is laser therapy safe?2023-01-18T14:21:08-05:00

Laser therapy has been in use for over thirty years with almost no side effects reported. Aspen Laser is FDA-registered and passes all safety compliance requirements. The treatments are not painful; in fact, laser is warm and comfortable to your skin. Dr. Chiungos will check in with you regularly to make sure the temperature feels right, and you can always speak up if it starts to feel too warm. The main safety concern is for the eyes, which is why Dr. Chiungos will provide protective glasses for both patient and doctor at each session.

Are there any situations that are unsafe for laser?2022-12-30T00:04:42-05:00

Laser is effective on most parts of the body; however, there are times when laser is not appropriate:

  • during pregnancy
  • within twelve months of cancer treatments
  • during the use of photo-sensitizing medications
  • over recent steroid injections (seven days)
  • over growth plates or reproductive glands
  • over tattoos or skin infections
How does laser complement traditional chiropractic?2022-12-30T00:05:14-05:00

Laser therapy promotes energy production supporting cellular repair, increased blood flow, increased red blood cell oxygen-carrying capacity, and decrease of inflammation. When used in conjunction with traditional chiropractic, laser can reduce pain and healing time, and promote a deeper, more complete healing to the area of concern.

How long will laser take?2022-12-30T00:05:45-05:00

Sessions typically last 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. They generally start longer and reduce in length as you heal. Most acute conditions require only 10 – 12 treatment sessions. If you have a chronic condition, you may need 12 – 20 treatments and one or two follow-up sessions every month. The amount and frequency of treatments are determined through assessment of your condition combined with Dr. Chiungos’s experience treating patients with laser. You will likely start to feel better after your first 5 sessions.
