Reducing the Impact of Herniated Discs with SpineMED® Decompression

Herniated discs, also known as slipped or ruptured discs, are a prevalent and often debilitating medical condition that affects millions of people worldwide. This condition occurs when the soft, gel-like center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior casing. The result can be nerve irritation, inflammation, and a host of painful symptoms.

The spine, a complex structure made of bones, muscles, and discs, provides support and flexibility to the body. The discs act as cushions between the vertebrae, absorbing shocks and allowing movement. When a disc is herniated, it can press on the nerves that run through the spinal column, leading to a range of symptoms such as:

  • Pain: This can be localized in the back or neck or radiate to other parts of the body, such as the arms or legs.
  • Numbness or Tingling: Often felt in the areas where the affected nerves travel.
  • Weakness: Muscles served by the affected nerves tend to weaken, affecting the ability to lift or hold items.

The impact of herniated discs on an individual’s quality of life can be profound. Daily activities, work, exercise, and even rest can become challenging and painful. Traditional treatments may include medications, physical therapy, or even surgery, but these options might not be suitable or effective for everyone.

In the search for non-invasive and drug-free solutions, SpineMED® Decompression emerges as a promising alternative. This advanced therapy is designed specifically to treat the underlying cause of herniated discs without the need for surgery or medication.

SpineMED® Decompression works by gently stretching the spine, creating a negative pressure within the herniated disc. This vacuum effect allows the disc material to be pulled back into place, relieving pressure on the nerves and allowing natural healing processes to occur.

The treatment is administered using state-of-the-art technology, ensuring precision and comfort. It’s tailored to each patient’s specific condition, making it a personalized approach to spinal health.

The introduction of SpineMED® Decompression into the healthcare landscape offers hope and relief to those who have been struggling with the painful and limiting effects of herniated discs. It represents a significant advancement in the field of spinal care, providing a pathway to recovery that is both effective and devoid of the risks associated with more invasive procedures.

Understanding Herniated Discs

Herniated discs, often referred to as slipped or ruptured discs, are a condition where the soft, inner part of a spinal disc protrudes through a tear or weakness in the tough outer layer. The spinal column is made up of a series of bones (vertebrae) stacked upon one another, with discs acting as cushions between them. These discs are filled with a gel-like substance that provides flexibility and shock absorption to the spine.

A herniated disc can occur in any part of the spine but is most common in the lower back (lumbar spine) and neck (cervical spine). Various factors can contribute to disc herniation, including aging, injury, repetitive strain, or genetic predisposition.

The symptoms of a herniated disc can vary widely depending on the location and severity of the herniation. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain: This is often the most prominent symptom. The pain may be sharp, burning, or aching and can be localized or radiate to other areas, such as down a leg or arm.
  • Numbness or Tingling: These sensations may be felt in the areas served by the affected nerves. For example, a herniated disc in the lower back may cause numbness in the buttocks, legs, or feet.
  • Weakness in Limbs: The affected nerves may cause muscle weakness, leading to difficulty in lifting objects, gripping things, or even walking.

The effects of a herniated disc on an individual’s quality of life can be profound and far-reaching.

Here’s how:

  • Daily Activities: Simple tasks like bending, lifting, or even sitting can become painful and challenging.
  • Work Life: Depending on the severity, a herniated disc may limit or prevent a person from performing their job, especially if it involves physical labor.
  • Recreation and Exercise: Engaging in hobbies, sports, or exercise may become restricted, leading to a loss of enjoyment and physical fitness.
  • Mental and Emotional Well-being: Chronic pain and limitations can lead to frustration, anxiety, depression, and a decreased overall sense of well-being.

The cumulative impact of these factors can lead to a significant decline in overall quality of life, making the search for effective treatment options a priority for those affected.

What is SpineMED® Decompression?

SpineMED® Decompression is a revolutionary, non-surgical treatment specifically designed to alleviate the symptoms associated with herniated discs. Unlike traditional methods that may involve medication or invasive procedures, SpineMED® Decompression focuses on addressing the root cause of the problem.

The treatment is performed using a specially designed table and computer-controlled equipment that gently and precisely stretches the spine. This stretching creates a negative pressure or vacuum effect within the herniated disc, allowing the protruding material to be pulled back into place.

One of the standout features of SpineMED® Decompression is its non-invasive nature. It does not require surgery, injections, or medication. This makes it an attractive option for those looking for a natural and less risky approach to healing.

The procedure is typically painless, and many patients find it relaxing. It’s often accompanied by other supportive therapies such as heat, cold, or electrical stimulation to enhance the healing process.

The process begins with a thorough assessment to determine if SpineMED® Decompression is suitable for the patient’s specific condition. Once confirmed, a personalized treatment plan is developed.

During each session, the patient lies on the SpineMED® table, and the affected area of the spine is gently stretched. The precise control of the equipment ensures that the stretching is targeted and effective, without causing discomfort.

The decompression effect encourages the retraction of the herniated disc material, relieving pressure on the nerves and promoting natural healing. Blood flow to the area is increased, delivering vital nutrients and oxygen that support recovery.

Typically, a series of sessions are required to achieve optimal results, with the frequency and duration tailored to the individual’s needs.

SpineMED® Decompression represents a significant advancement in the treatment of herniated discs. Its non-surgical, drug-free approach, combined with cutting-edge technology, offers a pathway to recovery that is both effective and patient-friendly. By directly addressing the underlying cause of herniated discs and providing a targeted, gentle treatment, SpineMED® Decompression has become a beacon of hope for many who have struggled with chronic pain and disability.

The Science Behind SpineMED® Decompression

SpineMED® Decompression is more than just a treatment; it’s a scientifically grounded approach to spinal health. Here’s how it works and what the process entails:

The underlying principle of SpineMED® Decompression is the creation of a controlled, targeted decompression of the affected spinal disc. By gently stretching the spine at specific angles and forces, a negative pressure or vacuum effect is created within the herniated disc. This vacuum effect allows the protruding disc material to be pulled back into its proper position, relieving pressure on the surrounding nerves.

The technology used in SpineMED® Decompression is state-of-the-art, allowing for precise control over the force, duration, and angle of the stretch. This ensures that the treatment is not only effective but also comfortable for the patient.

Description of the Process During a Decompression Session

A typical SpineMED® Decompression session begins with the patient lying on a specially designed table. The affected area of the spine is isolated, and the computer-controlled equipment is adjusted to apply the exact level of stretching required.

The session is painless, and many patients find it relaxing. The gentle stretching lasts for a predetermined duration, during which the patient can relax, listen to music, or even fall asleep.

Throughout the process, the equipment continuously monitors and adjusts the force and angle of the stretch, ensuring that the decompression is targeted and effective. This level of control is what sets SpineMED® Decompression apart from other treatments, providing a personalized approach to spinal care.

The cumulative effect of multiple sessions leads to the retraction of the herniated disc material, increased blood flow to the area, and the promotion of natural healing processes. The result is a significant reduction in symptoms and an improvement in overall spinal health.

The science behind SpineMED® Decompression is both fascinating and promising. By leveraging advanced technology and a deep understanding of spinal mechanics, it offers a non-invasive, drug-free solution to the painful and debilitating effects of herniated discs.

Patients who undergo SpineMED® Decompression often report significant improvements in their symptoms and a renewed sense of well-being. It’s a testament to the power of targeted, scientifically grounded treatment and a beacon of hope for those seeking relief from chronic spinal conditions.

Most insurance policies offer some chiropractic coverage. Dr. Chiungos works with Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare, Tufts Health Plan, Unicare/GIC, and Medicare. See the No Surprises Act for more information.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?2022-12-30T00:00:01-05:00

Absolutely. Chiropractic as a profession is more than 100 years old. We follow industry guidelines during our new patient induction process to minimize risk and maximize benefit. Chiropractic malpractice insurance is considered by many to be the least costly  professional insurance in the healthcare industry because chiropractic is generally considered a safe, manual therapy.

When will I start feeling better?2022-12-30T00:00:41-05:00

It depends on your mechanism of injury and your current state of health. You might start feeling better as soon as your adjustment is finished. You might need to go home and ice (Dr. Chiungos will advise you). If your injury is serious, it may take several visits. But your healing has begun from the first adjustment. Your personal care plan is designed to take you from where you are today to your best possible outcome. Dr. Chiungos will keep you updated on your progress at each visit.

SpineMED®

Will my insurance cover decompression treatment?2022-12-30T00:07:24-05:00

Decompression treatment is not currently covered by health insurance. If Dr. Chiungos believes this is an integral part of your treatment plan, he will discuss all costs and potential discounts before the start of care. You will receive informed consent.

Is spinal disc decompression treatment safe?2022-12-30T00:08:59-05:00

Spinal Disc Decompression with the SpineMED® Table has shown to be safe and generally without major side effects or complications once abnormal conditions have been ruled out. The process is so safe and comfortable, it’s not uncommon for patients to fall asleep!

Are there any situations that are unsafe for decompression?2022-12-30T00:09:55-05:00

Specific situations that are not suited for decompression therapy include:

  • Patients under 12 years old
  • If you had spinal surgery that involved clips, mesh or fusion
  • If you have fractures, tumors or infections
  • If you have osteoporosis or spondylolisthesis where there’s been a fracture or non-union defect in the spine, where that segment that we want to traction is unstable
How does decompression complement traditional chiropractic?2022-12-30T00:10:24-05:00

Damaged intervertebral discs seldom heal as the discs are constantly under pressure from muscular spasm—during normal activities, and even while sleeping! SpineMED is designed to reduce the pressure in the discs, promoting the influx of vital fluids, nutrients and oxygen back into the discs to assist the body’s natural rebuilding process. This process may speed up the natural repair and could eventually heal damaged spinal discs.

How long will decompression therapy take?2022-12-30T00:10:50-05:00

Sessions are typically 30 minutes long. It could take 15 to 25 sessions or more to see some relief from your discomfort. That’s variable based on your status and the condition we’re treating. Ideally, the sessions are performed daily with rest on the weekend.

Aspen Laser

Will my insurance cover laser treatment?2022-12-30T00:02:57-05:00

Laser treatment, as used in chiropractic offices, is not currently covered by health insurance. If Dr. Chiungos believes this is an integral part of your treatment plan, he will discuss all costs and potential discounts before the start of care.

Is laser therapy safe?2023-01-18T14:21:08-05:00

Laser therapy has been in use for over thirty years with almost no side effects reported. Aspen Laser is FDA-registered and passes all safety compliance requirements. The treatments are not painful; in fact, laser is warm and comfortable to your skin. Dr. Chiungos will check in with you regularly to make sure the temperature feels right, and you can always speak up if it starts to feel too warm. The main safety concern is for the eyes, which is why Dr. Chiungos will provide protective glasses for both patient and doctor at each session.

Are there any situations that are unsafe for laser?2022-12-30T00:04:42-05:00

Laser is effective on most parts of the body; however, there are times when laser is not appropriate:

  • during pregnancy
  • within twelve months of cancer treatments
  • during the use of photo-sensitizing medications
  • over recent steroid injections (seven days)
  • over growth plates or reproductive glands
  • over tattoos or skin infections
How does laser complement traditional chiropractic?2022-12-30T00:05:14-05:00

Laser therapy promotes energy production supporting cellular repair, increased blood flow, increased red blood cell oxygen-carrying capacity, and decrease of inflammation. When used in conjunction with traditional chiropractic, laser can reduce pain and healing time, and promote a deeper, more complete healing to the area of concern.

How long will laser take?2022-12-30T00:05:45-05:00

Sessions typically last 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. They generally start longer and reduce in length as you heal. Most acute conditions require only 10 – 12 treatment sessions. If you have a chronic condition, you may need 12 – 20 treatments and one or two follow-up sessions every month. The amount and frequency of treatments are determined through assessment of your condition combined with Dr. Chiungos’s experience treating patients with laser. You will likely start to feel better after your first 5 sessions.
